HOME - COURSES - PUBLIC SUPPORT UNIT
Public Support Unit
AIM - To provide the students with essential medical and trauma training to provide support to the variety of potential scenarios in the PSU Role. The objectives below will be dependant on which module the N.P.I.A. sets as the standard the course below would require modules 4 and 5 Module 4 could be run over 3 days.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
• State the role of the PSU medic.
• Define Scene Safety Management (Safety & Triage)
• Explain and demonstrate principles of infection control
• Summarise Post Incident Procedures
• Demonstrate a Patient Assessment (including Primary & Secondary Survey)
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication with patients and colleagues
• Recognise respiratory problems in a patient
• Compare and discuss breathing difficulties
• List causes of obstructed airway
• Demonstrate basic and advanced airway management skills
• Perform Basic Life Support Skills
• Perform Paediatric Basic Life Support
• Demonstrate the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on a casualty who is not breathing
• Identify Normal/Abnormal heart rhythms
• Discuss & Demonstrate varies dressings for different types of wounds
• Demonstrate treatment for a casualty in shock
• Discuss & Demonstrate recognition & treatment of casualty’s with a variety of medical conditions e.g. Heart conditions, Asthma etc
• Demonstrate skills and Identify equipment necessary to assist the Paramedic
• Identify recognition features of trauma injuries and demonstrate appropriate treatment (e.g. fractures, dislocations, burns etc)
• Define the effects of a Chest Injury
• Demonstrate the treatment of Chest Injury
• Discuss the effects of drugs & alcohol
• Demonstrate the treatment for a drug/alcohol overdose
• Needle stick injury procedures
• Dealing with a patient who has attempted to commit suicide (e.g. Hanging, Severe bleeding etc.
Course length - 5 Days
SYLLABUS:
The Pre Hospital Environment, Triage & Safety, Medical & Tactics, Patient Examination, Basic Life Support, Haemorrhage Management, Medical Emergencies, Shock Management, Trauma Emergencies, Airway Management, Use of Defibrillation, Medical & Trauma Equipment, Ballistic Trauma, Chest Trauma, Assisting the Paramedic, Environmental Factors, Extraction techniques
CERTIFICATION:
You can choose from the following that is applicable to your needs:
Level 3 QCA VRQ Diploma in Emergency Team Medic (5 DAYS)
HSE First Aid at Work (3 DAYS)
IHCD Royal College of Surgeons First Person on Scene Intermediate Award (5 DAYS)
COSTS:
£500 (ex vat) per person (Open Course)
£3750 (ex Vat) Group up to 12 (Held at our training centres or the customers training premises)
